Our Vision and Intent
At Hooton Pagnell All Saints, we believe that learning a modern foreign language enriches
children’s understanding of the world and fosters curiosity about different cultures and ways
of life.
Spanish is taught as our chosen Modern Foreign Language using the Language Angels scheme, which provides a clear, structured and progressive approach to language learning. Our vision is to ensure that all pupils develop a love of languages while gaining the confidence to communicate in Spanish. Through engaging lessons, children build knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, alongside an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures.
Through the teaching of Spanish, we aim for pupils to:
-
Develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Spanish.
-
Build a secure and growing bank of vocabulary and grammatical structures.
-
Gain confidence in communicating in another language.
-
Understand and appreciate aspects of Spanish and Hispanic culture.
-
Develop language-learning strategies that will support further study at secondary school and beyond.

Implementation
Spanish lessons follow the structured approach of the Language Angels programme, ensuring that all four key language learning skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are developed progressively.
Lessons typically include:
-
Retrieval and revision of previously learned vocabulary.
-
Introduction of new vocabulary and language structures.
-
Opportunities for speaking and listening through repetition, songs, games and partner activities.
-
Reading and writing tasks appropriate to pupils’ stage of learning.
-
Cultural learning to deepen pupils’ understanding of Spanish-speaking countries.

Lessons are designed to be interactive and engaging, helping pupils build confidence and fluency over time.
Curriculum Progression and Organisation
The Spanish curriculum is carefully planned using the Language Angels scheme and organised on a two-year rolling programme to support our mixed-age classes.
This ensures:
-
Clear progression in vocabulary, grammar and language complexity.
-
A balance of topic-based learning and skill development.
-
No unnecessary repetition of units across the cycle.
-
Consistent development across the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Units gradually increase in challenge, moving from basic vocabulary and simple phrases to longer sentences and more complex language structures. Pupils also learn about Spanish culture, traditions and geography as part of their language learning.
Adaptations
Teaching is adapted to meet the needs of all learners.
Strategies include:
-
Visual supports such as images, flashcards and gestures to reinforce meaning.
-
Scaffolded activities and sentence frames to support pupils who need additional guidance.
-
Opportunities for repetition and oral practice to build confidence.
-
Extension activities and more complex language tasks for pupils who are ready for greater challenge.

Teachers use assessment opportunities within lessons to adapt teaching and provide additional support or challenge where needed.

Impact
The impact of our Spanish curriculum is seen in pupils who are enthusiastic about language learning and confident in attempting to communicate in Spanish.
Pupils demonstrate:
-
Growing vocabulary and understanding of Spanish grammar.
-
Increasing confidence in speaking and listening activities.
-
The ability to read and write simple Spanish words, phrases and sentences.
-
Curiosity about other cultures and an appreciation of the wider world.

Assessment within the Language Angels scheme, alongside teacher observations and pupil outcomes, enables staff to monitor progress and ensure that pupils are developing the intended knowledge and skills.By the time pupils leave our school, they have built a strong foundation in Spanish and have developed the skills, confidence and enthusiasm needed to continue their language-learning journey at secondary school.
