Early Reading & Phonics at Hooton Pagnell

School Early Reading & Phonics  Lead: Mrs L. Burkill

Our Vision & Intent

At Hooton Pagnell All Saints C of E Primary School, we are committed to providing every child with a strong foundation in early reading and writing through a high-quality, systematic phonics curriculum.

We follow the Read Write Inc. Phonics (RWI) programme to ensure that all pupils rapidly develop the essential skills needed to become confident, fluent and enthusiastic readers.

We believe that reading is the cornerstone of learning. Fluent and confident readers are better able to think critically, access learning across the curriculum and develop a lifelong love of reading. Our phonics curriculum is designed to give every child the best possible start, enabling them to decode words accurately, develop language and comprehension skills, and grow in confidence as readers and writers.

Implementation

Phonics is taught daily using the Read Write Inc. programme, which provides a structured, carefully sequenced and highly consistent approach to early reading and writing.

Teaching focuses on:

  • phonics and letter–sound recognition to establish secure decoding skills

  • blending and segmenting to read and spell words accurately

  • comprehension and enjoyment of a wide range of texts

  • writing and spelling through the confident application of phonics knowledge

  • vocabulary development to broaden language and expression

  • fluency and confidence in both independent and aloud reading

Through engaging lessons, carefully matched reading books and purposeful practice, children quickly develop the skills they need to read with accuracy and understanding.

Lesson Structure

Phonics lessons follow the clear and consistent structure of the Read Write Inc. programme.

Lessons typically include:

  • revisiting and practising previously taught sounds

  • learning a new sound and its corresponding letter formation

  • oral blending and segmenting activities

  • reading words and short texts that closely match pupils’ phonics knowledge

  • writing words and sentences using newly learned sounds

Teachers model correct pronunciation and blending strategies, and pupils are given frequent opportunities to practise reading aloud and applying their skills in writing.

Progression & Curriculum Organisation

The Read Write Inc. programme is carefully sequenced to ensure that sounds, words and reading skills are introduced in a logical and progressive order.

Children move through the programme at a pace that reflects their individual progress. Regular assessment ensures that pupils are grouped appropriately and receive teaching that closely matches their current stage of phonics development.

As children become secure in decoding, increasing emphasis is placed on:

  • reading with fluency and expression

  • developing comprehension skills

  • building a rich and varied vocabulary

This ensures that pupils are well prepared for the transition from learning to read, to reading to learn.

Adaptations

Our phonics curriculum has been carefully developed to meet the needs of all children at Hooton Pagnell All Saints C of E Primary School.

Adaptations for disadvantaged pupils, including those with SEND, include:

  • additional small-group or one-to-one phonics support

  • targeted repetition and over-learning of key sounds and words

  • visual prompts and sound mats to support recall

  • adapted resources and alternative recording methods where appropriate

Multi-sensory approaches, such as using actions, magnetic letters and oral rehearsal, support engagement and help pupils to secure their learning. These adaptations ensure that all children are able to access phonics teaching and make strong progress alongside their peers.

Impact

The impact of our phonics curriculum is seen in pupils who can confidently recognise sounds, blend words accurately and read with increasing fluency and expression.

Children develop:

  • strong decoding and word-reading skills

  • growing confidence when reading independently and aloud

  • improved spelling and early writing accuracy

  • a positive attitude towards reading and books

Regular assessment within the Read Write Inc. programme ensures that progress is carefully monitored and teaching is responsive to pupils’ needs. Outcomes across school reflect strong early reading attainment and a secure foundation for future learning.

Our phonics provision supports children to become enthusiastic, capable readers who are well equipped to access the wider curriculum and develop a lifelong love of reading.
